About Flight Sim Movies
This site provides links to some of the best flight sim movies currently available. The movies are made by filming the action in a flight simulator and editing the shots together in an editing program to make a story. This process can be called Machinima and is a relatively new way of making movies.
The beauty is that almost anyone with a computer can make movies.
The problem is that almost anyone with a computer can make movies!
There are now thousands of home made movies available on streaming sites, so how do you know what is worth watching? Well, this site aims to select the very best flight sim movies from each year to ensure the good ones don't get lost in the deluge. All the movies here are made from flight simulators because, well, that's what we do. Mostly, the movies are from around the World War 2 era, but we are interested in other types.
The main place where movies are selected is from the UBI IL2 Movie Makers Forum but anybody can submit a movie for consideration.
The Team
The site was first published in October 2006 with the help from the team at Wingmen Productions (the guys who got together to make the epic Faith, Hope and Charity). We are now on the third incarnation, and this has been made possible with a team that has developed from the early days:
- Russell (Joe90) Boyd - FSM Manager
- Chris (Bbloke) Hunton - Webmaster
- Steve (Monty-Dan) Worsley - Helps choose movies and provides the sub domain as part of montydan.com
- Bruce (Wiley) Wallace - Awards the 'Olegs' and helps choose movies
- Sjon (GL2) Stevens - Brought the original team together and provides expert opinions
- Michael (310thFalcon) Lockhart - another voice to help decide which movies are good enough
Sit Back and Enjoy The Show!
If some of the movies only have sound and no picture, download and install the Xvid or DivX codec.
2008 IL2 Flight Sim Movie Competition Winners Announced
The Advisory Board of the FSM and IL2MDb websites, who comprise the Judging Panel for the Movie Competition, has announced the Winners:
In first place
The runner up
Both movies have been selected for inclusion here at Flight Sim Movies and also have been awarded Oleg’s. The full details of the Competition Results and Awards can be found on the Competition Web Site.
1C Games Developer offers support to IL2 Movie Competition
In a surprise move, 1C Company who developed the flight sim “IL2” has contacted Wiley, administrator of the IL2 Movie Competition, to offer one of their games as a free download to the winner of the competition. This is great news as it not only shows the games companies are taking notice of movie making, they also support the use of their game engine to make movies.
There was also support from the distributor Ubisoft in 2003 when they ran a similar competition.
We look forward with interest to the developments at Ubisoft and 1C when “Storm Of War: Battle Of Britain”, the long awaited sequel to “IL2” is released.
